Transhumanism, explained without stumbling into horrible connotations.

wolfkazumaru:

Transhumanism is a movement promoting the augmentation of human abilities to new levels— and, indeed, the creation of new capabilities altogether— through technology.

Now, what the fuck does that mean?

It means that we seek to change ourselves in ways that were previously impossible, and occasionally inconceivable. We seek to push the boundaries of what it means to be human.

We want to give people the ability to see ultraviolet light or sense electromagnetic fields. We also want to cure diseases and give people the ability to— should they so choose— negate physical infirmities.

We also want to expand the definition of “person” to something beyond just “human.” We— a lot of us, at least— want to expand it to include any sufficiently intelligent entity, be it human, uplifted dolphin or giant whirling mass of gears and Tesla coils.

It’s a movement based on optimism, hope for the future, the importance of technology, the value of choice, and personal freedom.
